Dry hair look for men?

For most of my life, I've gone without a true hairstyle. I either get it cut short or let it grow a little and do the messy look. The problem with the messy look is that the wind absolutely destroys my hair and makes me look insane. So I've finally decided to look into using some kind of a product to keep it in place.

Now, since I'm so inexperienced, I have no idea what products will do this. i want my hair to be held in place, but don't want it to look wet like with gel. how do i go about doing this?

this is an example of what i want:

There are actually a variety of short hairstyles: crew cut, ivy league(long crew cut), flat top crew cut, butch cut, brush cut, forward brush cut. This answer explains the basic short cuts. The first two links contained therein are quite informative:

The guy in the example photo has very thick wavy/curly hair. I doubt he has to use anything to keep his hair looking like it is. If you don't have the same type of hair, the only way you will get that look is by setting it with some type of gel or mousse or with a perm.

For short styles like a crew cut or ivy league:

...where the hair is allowed to take it's natural form, a tiny amount of control wax is all that is usually required. If the correct amount of control wax is used, the hair should have a dry look and wax does not set up a stiff hold. so the hair can be tousled and brushed back into place as one pleases. For longer styles like a regular taper cut:

...where the hair is allowed to take it's natural form, a few quick half pumps of a super hold spritz is all that is usually required if the hair is well cut.

Good Luck!
